Gortan's Hill

In the heart of Istria, on a historically significant location of Gortan Hill near Pazin, the Educational Gastronomy Centre of Istria has settled. It represents a place with agriculture deeply rooted, as evidenced by historical records. Namely, in the 18th century, the property of the former Camus Hill was owned by the Camus family, originally from Italy, which in its time used modern mechanization and had cultivated agricultural land, which is still cultivated today.
Since the middle of the 20th century, the term Gortan Hill has been used for the same location, after the hero Vladimir Gortan, but the way of life and work in agriculture and livestock have left significant traces that can be read today in architecture and tools from past times. Near the centre is located the farm of indigenous Istrian breeds, which best designates the survival and development of "Istrian cattle-Boškarin".
The Gortan Hill complex encompass stories that haven’t been fully expressed and provides a complete and specific experience that combines agriculture, tradition, culture and tourism through gastronomy. The Educational Gastronomy Centre of Istria, established within the Agency for Rural Development of Istria, embodies a platform for furthering the promotion and advancing the Istrian gastronomy with the main aim of valorisation and safeguarding the autochthonous breeds and agri-food products.
